How to find a new sense of purpose after retiring from your business

As an ambitious entrepreneur, you’re driven by the challenges and rewards of business ownership. Building and growing your firm has been the centre of your world for years. In fact, you can’t imagine life without it.

Yet, the time will come when it feels right to step back and embrace retirement.

However, no matter how “right” it feels, this can feel like a huge transition. Without a business plan and strategic goals to chase, how will you spend your days?

Fortunately, we have a few ideas.

Here are our top tips for finding a new sense of purpose after retiring from your business.

Take time for self-reflection

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) life expectancy calculator, if you’re a 40-year-old woman you have an average life expectancy of 87 years, and a 1 in 10 chance of living to 100. While a 40-year-old man could expect to live to 84 on average, with a 1 in 20 chance of becoming a centenarian.

So, however old you are when you retire, there’s a good chance you’ll have many years ahead of you to enjoy life after work.

In other words, there’s no need to rush into creating a new life plan (although this may be your inclination as an aspirational entrepreneur!).

Take the time to sit with your new situation and notice what thoughts come up. Journalling can be a great way to boost your self-awareness and delve deeper into your emotions.

It might help you to think about:

  • What brings you joy (outside of work)
  • Your values and strengths
  • Passions and hobbies that resonate with you.

As a business owner, it can be easy to let your work life take over. So, there might be lots of fun stuff you once enjoyed but haven’t done for years.

Equally, you may have a lengthy bucket list that’s been gathering dust while you’ve been busy growing your business.

So, let your mind wander – take a trip down memory lane and visualise possible futures.

This period of self-reflection could be the key to unlocking a new sense of purpose and direction.

Mentor or volunteer to help other business owners

Just because you’re no longer running a company, doesn’t mean you can’t put your business savvy to good use.

Over the years you’ve probably built up oodles of valuable experience, knowledge and skills. From knowing how to sniff out a fabulous new opportunity and preparing a business for launch, to scaling and selling your firm – your mind is a treasure trove of entrepreneurial gems.

If you’re feeling a little directionless and missing the business world now you’ve retired, why not share your expertise by mentoring young entrepreneurs who are just starting out on their journeys?

This could be the perfect way to stay in touch with your profession without making a commitment that compromises your new lifestyle. You might also find it extremely motivating and rewarding to help others smash their goals and ambitions.

Build meaningful relationships

As a professional, the connections you make probably play a key role in how you shape and grow your business.

Perhaps your outstanding leadership team spur you on to create a first-class workplace culture. Or maybe your business partner’s ambitious goals and unshakeable faith in you are the foundation for your success?

In a similar way, building meaningful relationships might help you find purpose in retirement. So, when you leave the world of work behind, get out there and start making new connections.

Join clubs and attend events that allow you to indulge in your new (or newly revived) hobbies while meeting like-minded people. If you can’t find anything locally that floats your boat, hop online or start your own group.

Finding a new sense of purpose in retirement is all about harnessing your entrepreneurial spirit and using it in a different way – to create a fulfilling and fabulous life packed with all the things you love.
